Corning Sponsorship Program in Western China
December 2008
Chengdu Corning Cable Co., Ltd., (CDCCS), an affiliate of Corning in Chengdu, has initiated a one-to-one sponsorship program to help the children of the Fuxing village school in Yingjing County. In 2006, Corning China’s CSR committee decided to extend the sponsorship program to include other Corning China entities in early 2007.
This program encourages employees to establish personal relationships with the students and give an annual donation of RMB 300 ($44 U.S.) or RMB 600 ($88 U.S.) until the children finish their studies in primary school or middle school. Each donation covers the cost of health insurance, medical checkups, vaccinations and basic school supplies.
Employees from Corning China’s seven entities enthusiastically volunteered to be matched with children for a one-to-one sponsorship. So far 24 employees have enrolled in the 1-1 sponsorship program in the first phase and 25 enrolled in the second phase. More children will be identified by the Yingjing Communist Youth League and added into the 1-1 sponsorship program.
In addition, Corning China set up a “Corning Library” in Fuxing School in 2006 and Qinglong school in 2007. Equipped with computers, audio systems and books, it turned out to be a fun place for the children to learn. Each year, Corning China’s CSR committee will maintain and replenish the libraries.
The CSR Committee asked schools to provide student evaluation forms through the Yingjing Communist Young League. The CSR Committee arranged envelopes with mail addresses and stamps for each child. Since May 2007, most sponsors have maintained mail contact with their sponsored children.
The sponsorship program shows not only the company’s commitment to CSR, but also employees’ participation.
