Corning Korea uses creativity in funding service project

April 2009
Through creative fundraising and a strong spirit of sharing, Corning Korea has provided nourishing meals for senior citizens who would have otherwise gone hungry, and have pledged to continue the service activities throughout the year.

The Korea team’s renewed approach to community service began late last year. Working to give back to the community, the team held a charity bazaar, bringing in things from home that they hadn’t been using – everything from children’s toys and stationery to DVDs, a hair dryer and an umbrella -- and offered them to other team members through a spirited auction.

In February, the team combined their auction proceeds with additional contributions from the company for a donation to the Yongsan Welfare Center for the Elderly, which provides free lunch service for elderly people in need. And rather than simply contributing the funds, team members decided to roll up their sleeves and spent portions of two Friday afternoons serving lunch to the people gathered at the Welfare Center in Seoul’s HyoChang Park.

Corning’s donation to the Yongsan Welfare Center helped provide enough food for the center to serve three weeks’ worth of meals to elderly clients. The project was so successful  with employees that they plan to continue the volunteer activities throughout the year.
