Employees take 'can-do' approach to hunger issue
April 2009
Dozens of Corning employees were recently up to their ears in cans of baked beans, tuna, chili and more – all part of an unusual volunteer program to help support the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, located near Corning, N.Y. The enterprising employees put their engineering skills to work to re-create some iconic Corning Incorporated landmarks out of more than two tons of canned food, all of which went to the Food Bank for distribution in the community.
The event was the first Canstruction of the Southern Tier, which invited volunteer groups to design and build unusual structures using canned food. The Corning employees formed two of seven local teams participating in Canstruction – about 100 similar events are taking place around the world this year. The Corning-area Canstruction was one of only three in New York state.
The entire project brought in nearly 18,000 pounds of food for the Food Bank – nearly 4,400 of which came from the Corning-sponsored teams. The groups also made cash donations to the Food Bank.
